Becoming a Virginia Scuba Diver is the best way to start your scuba adventure! Our divers receive a worldwide recognized Open Water Diver card from SSI.
Our goal is to prepare you for a lifetime of diving. Virginia Scuba restricts its instructors to 4 Open Water students to ensure that you receive the personal attention and practice you need to be a comfortable diver. If you are part of a larger group, we simply send more instructors to keep the student to instructor ratio low. We also do not charge you for additional Pool Training if you do not feel comfortable to dive in the Open Water Sessions. Everyone learns at different speeds, so we will be with you until you are ready to move on to the next step. You are paying to BECOME A DIVER, not to just get a card. We NEVER rush or pressure you to perform a skill until you are ready. Please don't shortchange yourself with cheap and/or weekend classes. It takes time and practice to become a comfortable diver. Our Open Water Diver course consists of 3 parts: Academics, Pool Training and Open Water Sessions.
ACADEMICS: After making your SSI online account, you may begin your "book work" at your own pace and convenience. You may download your courses to multiple devices and complete your studies at your leisure. After completing your online studies, you will participate in two classroom sessions at Virginia Scuba. Our instructors will begin helping you apply your recently acquired knowledge into real life diving.
During your pool sessions, you will be taught techniques to allow you to dive safely for a lifetime. Using the SSI "Comfort Through Repetition" philosophy, you will be ready to dive comfortably and competently during your diving adventures. During your pool sessions, you will learn how to dive in multiple gear configurations so you can make an intelligent decision on what gear will serve you best for the diving you choose to do.
OPEN WATER SESSIONS: During your Open Water dives, you will review several skills that you perfected in the pool. Here you will perform skills to ensure that you are comfortable in a true open water environment. SSI requires 4 dives to become a certified diver, however, at Virginia Scuba, you will do a 5th dive during your course. Your 5th dive will consist of you independently planning and executing an open water dive with your dive buddy under your instructor's supervision. This accomplishes two things: 1) you know without doubt that you are ready to begin making your own dive adventures and 2) it gets you ANOTHER DIVE!!!! (And isn't diving what we're here for?!) Now that you are a diver, it is time to start
